Earlier in 1895, Swami Vivekananda in conversation with Captain James Hensie Sevier and his wife Charlotte Elizabeth Sevier in England. Captain Sevier worked for five years in the British Indian Army. [9] In 1896, the nine-month Sevier-couple traveled to Switzerland, Germany and Italy with Swami Vivekananda. During their visit to the Alps Mountains, Swami Vivekananda wished to set up a center of vedicism in a similar place in India. [10] So in December 1896, Sevier-couple moved straight to India with Swami Vivekananda riding a steamer from Naples in Italy. Their goal was to find a place near Almora and establish a monastery. [11] They arrived in Madras in February 1897. [12] Then Vivekananda traveled towards Calcutta, Sevier-couple went to Almora. Hire a bungalow there. [13] Swami Vivekananda also lived in this bungalow with the Sevier couple for the next two years. When Vivekananda went to Kashmir, at that time, Sevier-couple of Vivekananda's monks-disciple husband Swarupananda, went out of the election in a suitable place of ashram in the hill areas of Uttarakhand. They found a place in July 1898. The place was part of a tea garden. Here the monastery was established with the help of Swami Swarupananda in the thick fir, pine and oak forests. [14] At the same time, the Belur Math was established in Calcutta. [15]

In the middle of 1898, the magazine's publication was closed in the premature death of the Editor of Prabuddha Bhartia magazine in Madras. On the request of Swami Vivekananda, the Sevier couple came forward to revive the paper. Husband Swarupananda was appointed editor of the magazine. On March 19, 1899, Swarupananda was formally inaugurated as the monastery on the birth anniversary of Ramkrishna Paramahghas. [16] Swarupananda performed this joint duties till his death in 1906. During the establishment of the Ashram, in the year 1899, Swami Vivekananda explained the purpose of the monastery in a letter: "... to give this ONE TRUTH a freer and fuller scope in elevating the lives of people and leavening the mass of humanity, we start this Advaita Ashrama on the Himalayan heights, the land of its first expiration.

Here it is hoped to stay away from all the superstitions and weakening contaminations. Here is the taught and practiced nothing but the doctrine of Unity, pure and simple; and though in whole sympathy with all other systems, this Ashrama is dedicated to Advaita and Advaita alone. "[20]

Captain Sevier died on 28 October 1900. According to his last wish, he was cremated on the bank of the Sarada river on the banks of the river Sarada. [10] [17] The mourners stayed at Swami Vivekananda Ashram on January 3-18, 1901, to console Mrs. Sevier. [21] [22] Captain Sevier's residence in the library [14] Srimati Sevier also lived in the ashram for several years.
